We are excited to announce a significant update to three of our devices: TCW242, TCG120-4, and TCG140-4. Until now, these devices supported only the MQTT Publish functionality. In the latest firmware update, we added MQTT subscribe support, offering even greater flexibility for IoT and automation applications.

What is MQTT Publish and Subscribe?

To understand the significance of this update, let’s briefly explore the two modes of MQTT operation: Publish and Subscribe. MQTT (Message Queuing Telemetry Transport) is a lightweight messaging protocol widely used in IoT applications. It operates on a simple, yet powerful “publish/subscribe” model.

    • MQTT Publish:
In the publish mode, a device sends (or publishes) data to an MQTT broker. For example, a temperature sensor might publish temperature readings at regular intervals. This mode is ideal for devices that act as data sources.
    • MQTT Subscribe:
In the subscribe mode, a device listens for messages from the MQTT broker. For example, a device subscribed to a “relay activation” topic can receive a command to turn on or off a relay. This allows for remote control and automation, as the device reacts immediately to instructions sent via the broker.

By supporting both publish and subscribe, our devices can now interact more dynamically with MQTT-based systems. They can both send critical data and respond to commands in real time.

How does this benefit you?

With the introduction of MQTT Subscribe, our devices are now capable of:

    • Real-time control: Devices can respond to configuration changes or commands without requiring physical intervention or periodic polling.
    • Improved interoperability: Devices can communicate more effectively with other MQTT-enabled systems, fostering seamless integration.
    • Smarter automation: Combining publish and subscribe functionality allows for more advanced IoT scenarios, such as triggering actions based on incoming messages or coordinating between multiple devices.
